The new Cosplay trend: anime eyes makeup

Whether you find this amusing, beautiful or disturbing, this is the latest trend in Cosplay. The idea is to draw shades around your eyes with white eyeliner, then the contour with black to make your eyes look bigger, and then used oversized colored contacts for the complete effect.

You may recall that Lady Gaga started this on 2009 in her video Bad Romance:

Ultimately, the best choice are these contact lenses (above) that give you the exact reflection of how anime eyes are drawn,

Senran Kagura anime trailer

The adaptation from the female ninja action game premieres on January 2013.

Takashi Watanabe (Shakugan no Shana, Slayers) will direct the series at the Artland animation studio. Takao Yoshioka (Sekirei, Elfen Lied) will be responsible for the scriptwriting of the series, while Takashi Torii will act as its character designer and chief animation director.

The character designs for the franchise were originally created by Nan Yaegashi while Yukinori Kitajima (Okamiden) assisted in creating its original story.

Nekomimi, ninjas, ecchi and slight yuri elements... not my cup of tea but the fans of the series must be thrilled ^_^

This trailer aired during this week's anime episode. Titled 'Phantom Rouge', the premise is centered on Kurapika's quest for revenge against the Phantom Troupe members that massacred his clan.

The film also ties with the most current chapters of the manga that still continues in Shonen Jump, as it shows the person with the number 4 spider tattoo.

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyobi anime announced

The premise of this light novel by Kimihito Irie is set in a world abandoned by God, in which humans are no longer born nor die, so a young girl serves as a “gravekeeper” who must execute the people that should, but unnautrally don’t, die.

If done well (not too moe), this anime can be the next great thing.

New Gatchaman anime film is in the works too

It has been reported that Hiroshi Sasagawa, director of Tatsunoko’s original Science Ninja Team Gatchaman anime has publicly revealed that a new Gatchaman anime film is now in development.

Such a production would make sense, as the Nikkatsu film studio is presently developing a live-action Gatchaman movie for release next summer.

Sket Dance will have an OVA

Japanese cover of Sket Dance volume 1

After the anime ended last month, an OVA of the series by Kenta Shinohara has been announced for next year.

It's likely that the anime series can return next year, the issue is the clash with Gintama anime which just returned, unless they alternate.

I would love to see another Gintama/Sket Dance crossover, though ^_^

Saint Seiya Omega anime review

As usual, this anime series has gotten mixed reviews ever since the day it was announced. This is in part because fans feel that there hasn't been a proper conclusion to the classic manga with the Tenkai-hen movie that takes place after the Hades saga.

The Saint Seiya: Tenkai Hen Overture movie was supposed to be the start of the Heaven saga in which the Saints would stand up and fight against the Gods of Olympus. There's still no news whether this will be concluded or not, despite the announcement that a CG Saint Seiya is in the works with no further details.

Meanwhile, sagas such as The Lost Canvas, by Shiori Teshirogi and Next Dimension by the author himself, Masami Kurumada, have filled the void for fans with prequels and alternate stories.

This new 'Omega' series is meant to be a proposal for the new generations, and I think it has fulfilled its role well after 26 episodes.

Although it hasn't been officially recognized as such, Shingo Araki did participate in this project before his passing away on December 2011, with initial sketches of character designs, later supported by Yoshihiko Umakoshi and Kunio Tsujita, who was also part of the classic Saint Seiya production staff back in the late eighties.

The series begins with Kouga, a 13 year old kid raised by Saori in a remote house in front of the beach.  Kouga has been training to be a Saint but he doesn't see the purpose of it. He doesn't find out Saori is Athena until Mars attacks and kidnaps her to make her cosmo the source of a new world of darkness.

In this stage of the story, the Saints have evolutioned into the Era of Elements. Each vital element is associated with a warrior's cosmo. Thus we have Wind, Water, Earth, Fire, Thunder, Light and Darkness, the 7 basic elements. Also there is a significant change in the aspect of the armors. The armors are no longer carried in a Pandora's box, but rather in a crystal.

This has been criticized by traditionalist fans, arguing that this has softened and changed the entire concept of the series, turning it almost into a moe series, and I wouldn't agree. The elements concept is a modern take on the plot, inspired on recent shonen mangas like Naruto and Bleach.

Allright, the crystal concept can be alleged as a shoujo thing, but hey, the series has to appeal to everyone. Anime audiences have changed a lot since the 80's and genre barriers have blurred.

The five bronze saints are reintroduced as Kouga of Pegasus, Ryuho of the Dragon, who is Shiryu and Shunrei's son, Yuna of the Aquila (Eagle), Souma of the Minor Lion, Haruto of the Wolf, and then Eden of Orion. They retain personality traits of the original Bronze saints that we love but with new twists.

The main villain is of course, Mars, the God of War and Violence. This version is based on creator Kurumada's explanation that he was the 13th God of Olympus, but banished because of his actions. He had an army of Berserkers that were defeated in the Mythic era, and that was the cause of the first Saint War against Hades.

The original saints do appear in the series as the plot developes, but they have been cursed by Mars and that inhibits them from using their powers at its fullest. Saori was the first revealed with the curse too. The curse dematerializes their bodies with time and use of cosmo.

So far, the animation quality has been great, with some weak moments, but definitely striking for a classic old school look with a modern take.

I look forward to more episodes, a total of 52 are scheduled and there can be more if all goes well.

According to ICv2, the seventh volume of Naoko Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga and the 58th volume of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto ranked #1 and #2 on Nielsen BookScan's list of top 20 graphic novels in American bookstores for September.

Other manga top-sellers include Yotsuba! volume 11 at #6, Alice in the Country of Clover volume 2 at #9, Bleach volumes 47 and 46 taking #11 and #12, and One Piece volume 64 at #13.

The previous month's #1, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, fell to #7. The BookScan rankings represent sales at Barnes & Noble and other book chains, independent bookshops, and online purchases, but not sales at comic book stores, Walmart, and some other venues.

Shin Mazinger Zero manga will have an epilogue

Z Mazinger
The classic Z Mazinger manga
This special chapter will come out in November 19. Artist Yūki Yogo confirmed via his Twitter account on Monday that the epilogue of his giant robot manga Shin Mazinger Zero will run in the January issue of Akita Shoten's Champion RED magazine. Yogo and writer Yoshiaki Tabata began collaborating on the manga in the same magazine in 2009.

The manga ran alongside the debut of the Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime remake.

Go Nagai's original Mazinger Z manga launched in 1972, spawning several television series, movies, and original video animation projects. Both the original manga and Shin Mazinger Zero follow Kōji Kabuto in his super robot Mazinger Z as he battles Dr. Hell, a mad scientist bent on world domination.
